Topic:
Eliminating Varnish-Related Failures Through Lubricant Chemistry Management
Speaker: Matt Hobbs, EPT Clean Oil
Location:Â In-Person Presentation in Calgary with Watch Party in Edmonton
Presentation Topic:
While turbine oil maintenance is recognized as being essential, many programs lack the basic information and tools to maintain their lubricants within specification. Existing lubricant maintenance is typically reactive, uses outdated filtration technology and does not target the root cause of most lubricant and mechanical failures: varnish.
This presentation introduces varnish and discusses lubricant chemistry management: a modern, sustainable approach to turbine oil maintenance that eliminates the possibility of varnish-related failures. Â Lubricant chemistry management offers users technical, cost and environmental advantages to different strategies which may be competitive or complimentary. Â Unlike traditional approaches that result in varnish accumulation and deteriorating oil quality over time, this approach maintains lubricant quality in ideal condition from day 1, improving performance and eliminating common issues. Â By doing so, lubricant chemistry management maximizes equipment performance, increases ROI, improves maintenance predictability and reduces the impact of power generation, allowing for more sustainable turbine operation.
Our speaker:
Dr. Matthew G. Hobbs is the Manager of Technical Services, Research & Development at EPT Clean Oil. Before joining EPT, Matt obtained his PhD in synthetic chemistry from the University of Calgary and was the General Manager of a National oil analysis laboratory. Matt is an active member of the ASTM D02.C01 committee for turbine lubricants, and was recently recognized by ASTM with an Award of Merit for his contributions. Matt is also the chair of the STLE’s Power Generation Committee and contributed to the creation of the ICML’s Varnish Deposit and Prevention Badges.
