On Monday, January 21st, Dr. Prem Pal will be talking to us about Biofuels. What are biofuels? Are there different kinds? Are they renewable? How do biofuels differ from regular fuel? Dr. Pal will be discussing the current industry status, as well as explaining some of the R & D activities currently underway with these fuels. Dr. Prem Pal is a senior scientist at the Fuels and Lubricants Group of laboratories at InnoTech, in Edmonton, Alberta. His research focuses on the development of next generation fuels, both from reneweable as well as the conventional petroleum resources. Prior to joining InnoTech, Dr. Pal was a research lead at British Petroleum funded catalytic conversion of bio-ethanol into value added products at Chemical Engineering Department of the University of Waterloo, Ontario. In 2006, Prem completed one-year Research Fellowship from the Royal Society, London at the University of Glasgow, where some of his pioneering work has been the discovery of innovative catalytic systems to produce clean hydrogen gas from methane for renewable fuels purposes. Prem received his PhD in heterogeneous catalysis from the Leverhulme Centre for Innovative Catalysis at the University of Liverpool, UK in 2002. Prem also served Syntroleum Corporation, USA for about 3 years where he practiced his catalyst and process scale-up skills on the successful development and commercialization of proprietary natural gas to liquid (NGTL) process known as Syntroleum Process.
