Topic:
Railroad Lubrication Reliability Issues
Speakers: Dianne Hunter and Colin Maciborski
Canadian locomotives experiencing sub-component failure resulting in the contamination of 30W lube oil into the split cooling system containing water and corrosion inhibitor. Failed component is normally an oil cooler where there is high pressure oil and low pressure coolant, allowing internal leakage. After failed component replacement the issue stands to clean the existing system of foreign contaminants. OEM has provided no recommendations for cooling system flushing.
Quality control issues with some rail companies center around process issues more than reliability, flushing, and lubrication issues.
Key Issues with current process:
- does not adequately clean the system
- Leaves lots of residue in system
- Potential damage to engine components
- Incompatibility with various seals and O-rings
- Waste effluent disposal
- Environmental factors
How do we propose to make this better?
- develop a locomotive specific flushing process to address the lack of standardized process
- Cost is always a factor- provide statistical data to support flushing position.
- Sustainable reliability is a key driver for the customers. Repeat shoppings to address current inadequate process drives reduced product availability and increased costs.
- Provide environmentally friendly solution
Currently, the companies are using a variety of methods to address the contamination:
- Tide laundry soap
- Cascade dishwasher detergent
- Basic drain and refill
- Operational flushing (fill, run, drain, fill) - time and cost in product
- Seal replacement
