Topic: Electric Vehicle Fluids: Challenges and Opportunities
Speaker:Â Sonia Hevia, Research Associate, Research and Development at HF Sinclair Lubricants & Specialties
LOCATION: virtual meeting
PRESENTATION TOPIC:
The fast-evolving electric vehicle (EV) drive unit technology is calling for specialized fluids to provide adequate hardware protection and improved system efficiency. In this presentation we will review the typical EV transmission designs and fluid requirements as well as fluid testing needs and evolution.
OUR SPEAKER:
Sonia Hevia has 16 years’ experience working in the oil and energy sector as a research and development product specialist. She joined Petro-Canada in 2007 to support its lubricants business and the Petro-Canada Lubricants brand (later acquired by Suncor Energy in 2009) from Dalhousie University, where she graduated with a PhD in Nuclear Analytical Chemistry.
Sonia initially joined the Analytical Services Lab before progressing to product design, where she worked across passenger car motor oils, tractor hydraulic fluids and off-road transmission oils.
In 2017, Petro-Canada Lubricants was acquired by HollyFrontier and is part of the Lubricants and Specialties segment, where Sonia is a research associate. She is currently responsible for the Petro-Canada Lubricants heavy-duty and light-duty automatic transmission and electric vehicle fluid product line.
Sonia has been a member of the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE) and the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE International) since 2007. She is also a member of SwRI Advanced Fluids for Electrified Vehicles (AFEV) Consortium. This Consortium applies a multidisciplinary approach to find answers to the new challenges imposed on the lubricants by electric vehicles.
