February STLE Meeting - Calgary

February 12, 2018

Topic:
STLE Learning Pathways

Speaker: Paul Hetherington, Team Leader Technical Services Canada

Organization: Petro-Canada Lubricants Inc.

As someone involved in the lubrication industry have you ever found yourself thinking or asking a simple question like:

  • “I need to learn more about bearings?”
  • “What really are the differences between hydraulic oil, gear oil and engine oils?”
  • “I want to educate myself and challenge one of the certification exams – but where do I start?”
  • etc. etc.

The education and certification programs (CLS, OMA, CMFS, etc.) of the STLE have become an integral part of the Society during the last 25 years or so. Also during this time the Society has generated and amassed a significant amount of educational and peer reviewed reference materials related to the lubrication industry. Although each of the certification programs has identified a list of key references (i.e. Body of Knowledge) it was also well recognized that there was a vast amount of other materials that could also be used to assist, educate and build technical competence in a key knowledge area (i.e. Lubrication Specialist). But of course – which ones are the best?

A couple of years ago the Society took on the massive initiative to thoroughly review these key references and materials (articles, webinars, reference books, short courses) and to identify which ones could be utilized as relevant learning for various key subject areas (i.e. bearings, gears, hydraulics, additives, etc.). These relevant materials have been organized into a systematic learning process called the STLE Learning Pathways. These learning materials have been organized and are available on the STLE website to aid individuals in finding relevant materials at the Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced level for all of the key subject areas. The presentation will take the attendees on a short journey on the development of the project and how to access the Learning Pathways information on the STLE website.
